why start swimming lessons early?
Swimming skills are one of the most important early life skills children can learn. In Australia where pools, beaches and waterways are part of everyday life, introducing children to water early helps build familiarity, safety awareness and lifelong swimming skills from a young age.
Baby and toddler swimming lessons also support early development through movement, routine, sensory experiences and interaction.
Our lessons focus on:
Water safety and survival foundations
Comfort and familiarity in the water
Bonding between parent and child
Movement and co-ordination development
Listening and routine skills
Early swimming and water confidence
Research from Griffith University has also found children who participate in early swimming lessons may demonstrate stronger physical, social, and cognitive development outcomes during the early years.

Not at all. We actually have a program designed specifically for this age. Our free Teeny Tots introductory lessons are available for babies aged 3 to 6 months at our Heidelberg swim school — a calm, gentle first experience in our warm mineral pool with no pressure and no structured technique. Once your baby reaches 6 months they can transition into our Tiny Tots classes and begin our structured baby swimming program.
No — never. Our baby and toddler swimming lessons in Heidelberg are always gentle, nurturing and guided entirely by your child's comfort and readiness. Breath control and guided submersion are introduced gradually as part of our structured program, and only when your child shows they are ready. There is no forcing, no pressure and no rushing at any stage of our lessons.
It is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Babies and toddlers can take a few lessons to settle into a new environment, and our infant-trained instructors are very experienced at supporting unsettled little ones in the water. You are always in the pool with your child and fully in control — if your baby needs a break or isn't comfortable that day, we always follow their lead. Many children settle quickly once they feel the warmth of our mineral pool and the reassurance of being held by you.
Our baby and toddler swimming program at Heidelberg is structured across four age-based levels — Teeny Tots for babies 3 to 6 months, Tiny Tots for babies aged 6 to 12 months, Tots for toddlers aged 1 to 2 years, and Talented Tots for children aged 2 to 3 years. Placement starts with age, but your instructor will always assess your child's water confidence and ability in the first lesson and recommend the right level from there. If your child needs to move up or down, we will guide you through that transition. Every child develops differently, and our instructors are experienced at matching lessons to individual readiness.
No — you do not need to be a strong or confident swimmer to participate in our baby swimming lessons. Our learn-to-swim pool in Heidelberg is shallow and purpose-built for this type of class, and your instructor is in the pool with you throughout every lesson. Many parents who are not comfortable swimmers participate in our baby classes without any difficulty. If you have concerns about being in the water yourself, please mention it when you enquire and we will make sure you feel supported and comfortable from your very first lesson.
Yes — and there is significant research to support it. A landmark multi-year study by Griffith University tracked over 7,000 children under the age of five across Australia, New Zealand and the United States and found that children who participated in early swimming lessons were significantly ahead of their non-swimming peers across cognitive, physical and social development. Early swimmers were found to be up to 11 months ahead in verbal and literacy skills, up to 20 months ahead in their ability to follow directions and instructions, up to 6 months ahead in mathematical reasoning, and up to 15 months ahead in social and emotional development. These advantages were consistent regardless of family income or background. Starting baby swimming lessons early, ideally from 3 to 6 months, gives children the longest possible runway to benefit from this kind of stimulation.
From age 3, children are ready to transition from our parent-supported baby and toddler classes into independent children's swimming lessons, where they begin in the water without a parent alongside them. Our Talented Tots program for 2 to 3 year olds is specifically designed to prepare children for this transition, building the water confidence, physical skills and comfort in the pool environment they will need to thrive in independent lessons. If you are thinking ahead about children's swimming lessons in Heidelberg, feel free to ask our team about what that next stage looks like.
